A Brief Introduction to Belief Revision∗

چکیده

Running against this principle are Cartesian foundationalist views which contend that, with the exception of core foundational beliefs, the mere fact that a person starts out believing something gives it no privileged position regarding immunity from dismissal, and that only a justification built on foundational beliefs warrants continued belief. Alchourrón, Gärdenfors and Makinson (AGM) carried out pioneering formal work in the area of belief change [3, 2, 1], crafting axiomatizations for operators of belief expansion, contraction and revision. These axioms reflect the principle of Conservatism in that the axioms guarantee a minimum abandonment of beliefs when a contraction is carried out. Specifically, among the axioms for contraction is Recovery, which basically says (in the presence of the other contraction axioms) that the contraction operator is such that: if we first contract a target sentence φ from a set K of beliefs and then use our expansion operator to put φ back in, the resulting set of beliefs is precisely K; thus the name, and we see that this axiom insures that contraction keeps K intact as much as possible. Recovery is the most controversial of the AGM axioms, having received more than its share of criticism. My goal in these notes is merely to survey a few results regarding Recovery’s place in the formal framework of AGM, as well as to take a quick look at some competing frameworks, as a means to introduce the concepts (and the literature) of belief revision and theory change. As such, I will not delve deeply into philosophical tensions between foundationalism and coherentism, or concomitant formal issues such as whether to operate on whole

A Survey of Belief Revision on Reputation Management

Reputation management is a process of tracking, reporting and reacting to an entity’s actions and other entities’ opinions about those actions. In practical world, as each action may have different effects, entities changing opinions towards each other is unavoidable. The belief on an entity is based on the entity’s reputation. In a reputation management system, the reputation of a certain enti...

The Blockchain: A Gentle Four Page Introduction

Blockchain is a distributed database that keeps a chronologicallygrowing list (chain) of records (blocks) secure from tampering and revision. While computerisation has changed the nature of a ledger from clay tables in the old days to digital records in modern days, blockchain technology is the first true innovation in record keeping that could potentially revolutionise the basic principles of ...

Belief Revision: A Vade-Mecum

This paper contains a brief survey of the area of belief revision and its relation to updating of logical databases as it has developed during the last years. A set of rationality postulates for revisions are presented. A couple of semi-algorithmic models of revision and updating are introduced. The models are connected to the postulates via some representation theorems. Finally, the relation b...

A Brief Overview of Possibilistic Logic

The intended purpose of this research 1 is i) to show the specificity of possibilistic logic with respect to other logics with weighted statements, in particular its ability to deal both with uncertainty and vagueness, ii) to develop proof methods for possibilistic logic, and iii) to relate its ability to cope with partial inconsistency to belief revision and non-monotonic reasoning issues. See...
